Replacing the Main Spring

Tools needed: #3 pozidrive screwdriver, pliers, beer.

First, grab the cables right behind the head and shove them forward.

Pull the cable through a few more inches.

Using the screwdriver, pound on each side of the orange anchor to tap it forward.

Pull the anchor out with pliers if needed. Remove it.

Twist and pull up to pop the head off of the spring.

Use the screwdriver to unmount the binding while using plenty of downward pressure.

If the binding was mounted with epoxy and you can't turn the screws, stop before you strip the heads. Put a 3/32" drill bit in a drill backwards so that the flat end is sticking out. Spin the drill at full speed for 30 seconds while pushing down hard into the center of the screw head. The heat should break the epoxy bonds and make the screw easier to back out. Repeat the spinning if it's still stuck.

Twist the spring out of the shim and replace it. Make sure the end of the spring is set against the back of the spring slot as shown.

Remount the binding using waterproof wood glue, epoxy, or whatever the ski manufacturer recommends. Make sure the cables go through the inside of the toepiece. If the binding does not have a 22 Designs logo on the shim, put 2 layers of duct tape on each cable guide and put them in the front position to ensure room for them. Remove the duct tape after mounting.

Push the head back down onto the spring, and push the anchor back in. Make sure the anchor is right side up as shown.

Pull the cable assembly back to set the cable and anchor into the head. The cable should be flush with the front of the head.
